Update 2005
- I wasn't kidding*,... it really is an
exciting time for new waste heat technologies.
(*In late 2002 when Waste Heat
Systems was started, I got on my soap box and talked about the
new Waste Heat technologies being developed (organic Rankine
cycle
,
cascading heat cycle
,
Stirling heat engine
,
new small,
but highly efficient steam turbines ,
adsorption
and absorption heat-to-cold). I even talked about technological leaps like
thermo-acoustics in the research wings of universities.)
I was not
the only one getting excited
- here
is some of what has happened in just 2 years!
2005 Update:
Adsorption
Chillers
-
Nishiyodo
adsorption chiller technology (patent and production) has
passed to a
HIJC-USA,
a company who in just two years has grown the USA adsorption
installation system population from zero to seven (7)
projects.
2005 Update:
Waste Heat-to-Power
-
United
Technologies
has combined efforts of their
UTC-Power
and
Carrier Air
Conditioning
to introduce an entire new product group called "Pure" for
converting Low Grade Heat directly into electrical power and
refrigeration utilizing both microturbine and fuel cell
technologies.
2005 Update:
Cascading
Refrigeration
-
General Electric
has signed an agreement with
WOW Energies
for development of patented low grade heat-to-power technology
system designs for power
plants.
2005 Update:
Combined Cool
Heat Power
-
Ingersoll-Rand
and
Capstone,
have introduced and installed
microturbine
based CCHP
(combined cool
heat and power systems) operating at the unheard of
fuel-to-useful energy efficiency levels above 80%.
2005 Update: Thermo-Acoustics
- Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream
has installed a thermo-acoustic
(heat-to-sound-to-cold) refrigeration
system from QDrive,
whose other commercial thermo-acoustic products include
heat-to-sound-to-power
systems.
2005 Update: Waste Heat Systems -
Waste Heat Systems
became part of Eco-Holdings LLC
and in the process has completed consulting contracts for
Kühnle Kopp & Kausch
(German Steam Turbines), Capstone
(Microturbines), and has extended the development of
BurnerGen
(100% efficient power & NOx reduction system) for boiler
combustion air preheat, and
BELOES (Base
& Emergency Load Operation Energy System) Combined
Cool Heat and Power for data center
facility energy and critical power requirements.
With all this
happening in just 2 short years, you have to begin to wonder if
you are not considering waste heat recovery or Combined Cool
Heat Power, are your are dooming your project to future
non-competitiveness?
